IT veteran and organic farmer (of Kanchi Organic Farms), Kannappan Jaishankar has established India’s first organic-only gated community for seniors, Kanchi Eco Village in Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
The 18-acre eco village has 120 plots for sale and has an integrated 6.5-acre organic farm, desi cow gaushala, free range goat and poultry farm, and fish pond.
All animals in the village will be fed agricultural waste from the organic farm. Cow dung and cow urine will be utilised at the farm itself in order to increase the microbial count of the soil. The milk from the cows would be purchased by residents at a nominal cost. The same applies to free range meat and eggs.
The ecologically sustainable habitat has been conceived to be a 100% self-sufficient residential complex wherein everything—including food, water, and electricity—is produced from within the community.
“The idea behind Kanchi Eco Village is to provide a 100% sustainable and self-reliant facility. Everything—from organic food, to A2 milk, to ghee, meat, eggs, electricity—all will be produced by Kanchi and, that too, at nominal rates. There will be no need to depend on external vendors and entities. Efficient soil management, water management, waste management, organic food, renewable energy, preserving nature, and balancing the ecological life cycle are the main focus of Kanchi Eco Village. We aspire to transform the industrial and globalised agricultural model into zero-miles agriculture,” says 59-year-old Jaishankar, who also lives in the eco village, along with his wife.
AMENITIES AT KANCHI ECO VILLAGE
- Organic Farm: To meet the nourishment requirements of the residents. Out of the total 18 acres of the eco village, 6.5 have been earmarked for the organic farm. The purpose of the organic farm is to grow food for the residents within the campus and these foods will be sold to the community at nominal rates.
- Gaushala (cow habitat): For A2 milk and other dairy requirements. Indigenous cows would be fostered in the gaushala.
- Free Range Goat & Poultry Farm, Fish Pond: For antibiotic-free meat and eggs.
- Entirely Solar Powered community. The community will be largely off grid and will rely on solar power for electricity.
- Free Gobar Gas to all residents will be provided. No LPG connections would be required.
- 1,000 Trees and Bamboo Clusters will provide shelter for birds and, of course, the residents.
- Rain Water Harvesting Facility in each building. Farm ponds and swales across the facility for water conservation.
- A common Traditional Kitchen equipped with manual grinders for preparing stone-ground spices, batters and flours.
- Ground water will be available to all residents and no RO water will be required.
- 24/7 medical care and ambulance.
- Meditation Hall.
- A qualified Yoga teacher and a Siddha doctor would be available inhouse.
- Two large ponds within the facility.
- Club house with swimming pool, library, music hall, gym, etc.
- 24/7 security.

Part of the Global Ecovillage Network, Kanchi Eco Village is located 8 km off NH4 (Chennai-Bengaluru Express Highway) and is a 2-hour drive from Chennai International Airport. Whereas India has approximately 26 other eco villages, Kanchi is the only one that serves as a residential gated community for seniors.
Kanchi Eco Village houses 1,000 trees and several bamboo clusters.
A 7-ft tall boundary wall outlines the compound.
Although the property has been conceived as a senior retirement community due to its distance from the city, plots are for sale for anyone with an appreciation for the natural life.
The plots are freehold and the project has been approved by the Directorate of Town & Country Planning, Tamil Nadu. Buyers can purchase plots and then construct homes as per their requirements. Plots of 1,200 – 2,400 sq ft are available at Rs 500 per sq ft.
