On October 3, 2021, in Lakhimpur, Uttar Pradesh, a convoy of three vehicles, including one belonging to Junior Home Affairs Minister, Ajay Mishra, crashed into a group of farmers protesting against the new agriculture laws.
Eight people, including four farmers, were killed in the incident.
Atrocities committed by the Central and State Governments against the democratically agitating farmers are on the rise. Violence was also unleashed against protesting farmers in Delhi on the last Republic Day.
Earlier, in 2017, in Madhya Pradesh, the government opened fire on protesting farmers demanding the waiver of agricultural loans, killing six people.
Various farmers’ organisations have been agitating for the last few years against the agricultural policies implemented by the Central Government. But the government is not ready to accept the demands of the farmers or change the policies. This leads to conflicts.
Farmers have the right to strike democratically. Trying to suppress it is a fascist regime. The government should be prepared to listen to the demands of the farmers through consensus.
The Organic Farming Association of India (OFAI) expresses disagreement against the unilateral violence on the part of the Junior Home Affairs Minister in Lakhimpur, and expresses solidarity with the continued farmers’ struggle.
Everybody knows what is happening in name of farmers. Farmers as well as Government is not listening to each other.
