From using leftover blackcurrant pulp from juice production to make haircare serum to utilising plastic waste in their packaging, the winners of the 2019 Sustainable Beauty Awards are at the very forefront of the sustainability movement within beauty care.

Ecovia Intelligence declared the winners of the 2019 Sustainable Beauty Awards on November 4 at a dedicated awards reception at the Paris Marriott Champs-Elysées hotel.
About 200 senior executives from the global beauty industry attended the awards reception.
Hosted by Ecovia Intelligence, the aim of the Sustainable Beauty Awards is to give recognition to operators who are pushing the boundaries of sustainability in the beauty industry.
The winners and runner-ups are as follows:
NEW SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT
Keracol Limited’s Dr. Craft (UK) received top prize for its haircare products made using blackcurrant pulp. Launched in June 2018, the sustainable haircare range is made from leftovers from the production of blackcurrant drinks.
Eco Tan (Australia) is runner-up with its Hand-and-Nail Cream. Other finalists include Hair O’right Hinoki Scalp Exfoliating Gel, Olivia Care Shampoo Bars, and products from Rhodes Skincare.
SUSTAINABLE INGREDIENT
Ashland (USA) is the winner with its Cb2-skin™ biofunctional. Launched in April 2019, the material is a patchouli-derived skin cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) activator. The patchouli has been procured from sustainable farms in Colombia.
RAHN AG’s cellactive® (Germany) is runner-up in this category. The carbon-neutral cell booster is used in skincare and haircare products. IFF Lucas Meyer Cosmetics’ SKINectura™, Intiki’s Myro PE, Pierre Fabre’s Green Native Expression of Aquatic Mint, and Sensient Cosmetic Technologies’ NatPure Xtra Longevity were among other finalists.
SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING
The winner in this category is Henkel (Germany) with its social plastic initiative. It has partnered with social enterprise Plastic Bank to collect plastic waste from waterways to use in the packaging of its personal care and home care products.
PharmMatt (France) is the runner-up. In June 2019, the company introduced recycled and compostable materials for its Frescoryl Nature Chewable Toothpaste Tablets. Aveda, BioAroma and Maiiro were the other finalists.
SUSTAINABILITY PIONEER
AAK Personal Care (Sweden) received top prize for its shea nut sustainable sourcing. Its Kolo Nafaso programme has made a positive impact on over 230,000 women shea collectors in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Ivory Coast.
Boticario Group (Brazil) received second prize for its packaging collection programme, the largest of its kind in Latin America. Hair O’right International, Naturamus and Seppic (Serdex) were also finalists.
SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP
Hair O’right International (Taiwan) is the winner. The company has undertaken a number of green initiatives, such as carbon-neutral production, sustainable packaging, using food byproducts as raw materials, and developing certified haircare products.
Clariant (Germany) is the runner-up. It is working with partners to reduce the impact of its ingredients. Other finalists include Heinz-Glas, REN Clean Skincare and TCI Co.
Over 100 entries from sustainable brands across the globe were received for the 2019 Sustainable Beauty Awards. The winners and runner-ups were picked by a jury comprising an ingredient firm, a retailer, a skincare formulator, a natural cosmetics organisation, and a research firm.
